Addendum to my post on Stridex BHA pads

Disclosure: This post contains no affiliate links.
I just recently posted about these things, I know. But I was reading the ingredients list for the millionth time, and somehow I had failed to notice until just now that they contain menthol. Ugh. I guess it was too good to be true. It's low on the list, but I really hate when skincare products have menthol in them. Partly just because I feel like they're trying to trick me. Oooooh, tingly, that must mean it's doing something, right? Fuck off. But also because menthol can be a cause of low grade irritation, which may or may not be something you are worried about, but which I'd rather just avoid when there's no good reason for it. Anyway, heads up if menthol is an ingredient that pisses you off too. (Harley Quinn recommended the Paula's Choice BHA body treatment as a less expensive alternative in the comments of that previous post. I definitely plan to look into that.)

  1. I hate how effective skin care manufacturers are at preying on the dumb. OOOO, THIS SMELLS PRETTY SO I WILL USE IT ON MY FACE. Case in point - the PC's recommended Clean n Clear face wash (for "sensitive skin," I should add) I'm using has a bunch of fragrance in it. WHY. JUST STOP. I DON'T NEED SMELLS.

And I will feel really bad if you buy that whole bottle and it doesn't work well for you, so I'm pre-apologizing now, just in case. Lo siento, mi corazon.

    1. Yes, not even the preying on dumb people, but just people who don't have the time/interest to spend a lot of time looking into this stuff. There's a lot of sort of "folk wisdom" out there that seems to make a lot of common sense until you question it. But a lot of these products count on most people not questioning it, because they have no real reason to do so. I fucking hate menthol, though.

Don't worry, I will try some samples first!

  2. Honestly? Just because something can be an irritant doesn't mean it will be for you. Menthol doesn't cause skin damage like alcohols do, if you already bought the pads I would just patch test them near your ear and see if it's an irritant for you specifically. The reddit skincareaddiction board has a lot of raves for them.

    1. That's true, which is why I specified that it's only an issue if it's something you worry about. But there are also some suggestions that even things that don't look/feel irritation will actually cause irritation to the skin that damages it in the long run. Personally, I really don't like menthol in my skin care products. I don't mean to negate the experiences of anyone who has liked this, but I wanted to point out why I probably won't actually use it (haven't bought any yet). The major price difference probably makes these worthwhile for people who don't hate menthol.

  3. I don't use any products with menthol or other potentially irritating ingredients. Why take that chance? I knew this product was too good to be true!
I want to try Paula's Choice new Resist BHA liquid as soon as I use up my other BHA from her.

    1. Yes, there are different opinions about how serious a problem ingredients like that really are, but since it serves no actual purpose, I'd prefer not to have the menthol in there!
