Why does everyone seem to like NYX cosmetics so much? What are the supposedly-stellar products they make?

You may have noticed that I haven't had much luck with the NYX products I've tried so far. The Butter Gloss is fine, though the color I have isn't flattering for me. Other than that? I don't know. Their eyeshadow primer works well enough, but you can get great primers for much cheaper. I like the packaging, and I wonder if the fact that it looks more expensive than it is, and that they make products that seem to replace more expensive things, is the real appeal. But the brand isn't particularly cheap - most of it is more expensive than your typical drugstore makeup.

The Science of Chic recently reviewed NYX's Bronze Smokey Look Kit, which looks good and has nice packaging - but as it turns out, the quality, performance, and color choices of the actual products are all sub-par.

Have you found something from NYX that was really fucking good? Actually better than the best e.l.f. and Wet N Wild choices, which are a third the price or less? What am I missing? At this point, I am ready to write them off completely.

Oh, wait, the NYX Girls nail polishes are SPECTACULAR and cost $2 each. But I tend to categorize nail polish separately from face/color cosmetics.

  1. Honestly, I kind of felt the same way. I took advantage of that $60 worth of NYX for $30 deal they had a while back, and while I was pretty content with it, I definitely would not have been if I'd paid full price for it. I like all of the products I got, but I agree that they're not necessarily any better than comparable drugstore products.

    1. My thought exactly. They are not terrible, but not worth the extra cost. It's good that there are often opportunities to get them on sale, I guess.

  2. The only product of theirs I've used & would like more of is the loose pigment eyeshadows. But not as eyeshadows, as nail polish. However I'm not going out of my way to get them and haven't tried anything else because of what you said basically. They aren't entirely cheap as a line. I'm not sure what the hype is about either.

    1. e.l.f. also has awesome loose pigment eyeshadows that work well for that, fyi.

  3. I'm a big fan of their blushes! I have a bunch of their powder blushes and am really impressed by how consistently nice their quality is. Great pigmentation, goes on smoothly, and blends easily. Plus, they come in a butt-ton of colors. I also have one of their cream blushes that gets a thumbs up because it can withstand a whole day on the oil field that is my face without fading. Haven't tried either e.l.f.'s or wnw's blushes, so I can't say how they compare unfortunately.

  4. I like the NYX Girls lipglosses because they are really pigmented and less than $2 and I used to wear their Beanie eyeshadow every single day until I dropped it and it crumbled into dust all over my bathroom floor (SOB).

  5. I'm a fan of their Runway Collection eye palettes for their convenience. We don't have Wet n Wild here in the UK so cheap, decent palettes are hard to find when a lot of drugstore shadows just aren't up to scratch.

I like the Nyx palettes for travelling with, particularly the Smokey Eyes palette. I find it really versatile, like it's not just straight up charcoal greys and icy silvers. I reviewed it earlier in the week here: http://www.taupeandteacups.co.uk/2013/04/nyx-smokey-eyes-palette-review-many.html

Keen to see if their blushes are as good as everyone says!

    1. Ah, but you do have MUA! I haven some awesome eyeshadow palettes from them. I'm getting the impression that NYX's eyeshadows (sometimes) and blushes and lip glosses are what's good - but I can usually get something just as good cheaper from another company.

  6. Hello there, Lovely!

Just weighin' in with some thoughts on NYX products that DON'T suck:
    - NYX Black Label Lipsticks. They're a few bucks pricier then their "normal" round lipsticks, but the formula is a definite improvement since it isn't all slippery. The wear time is also notably longer, and the color range is fabulous!
    - NYX Cream blushes. PIGMENT FOR DAYS and superb blendability.
    - NYX Slim Lip Pencils. Definitely one of the better drugstore lip pencils out there. Great pigmentation, not too terribly dry, and excellent staying power.
    - NYX Powder Blushes. These buggers blend like a charm.

I've also heard through the grapevine that their new Curve Liquid Liner is pretty spectacular, even if it is a bit pricey for such a low-priced brand.

    1. Thanks! Good to know! My hoard of these sorts of products is too big to try anything new right now, but I will keep these in mind.

  7. I agree 100000 % with you. My town just opened an Ulta a couple weeks ago, and I was just DYING to get my hands on two things, the chocolate bar palette and any and all sorts of NYX products, since no other store sold their products. I kept researching and watching YouTube videos about the "best nyx products" and "nyx, BETTER than high end products for a drugstore price!" So, of course, I had to jump on the band wagon too. Boy, THAT was a big mistake. So far, I bought a butter gloss, creamy, round lipstick (in orange soda & pure nude) and a colorful liquid eyeliner. The eyeliner wasn't that bad actually. It did apply a bit messy and streaky at first, but after I went over it a second time, it looked pretty good and stayed on for over 24 hours. On to the lippies...for starters, I've only heard good things about these lipsticks, and most lipsticks work pretty well with my lips and I'd like to believe that I'm pretty skilled my makeup applications, but these lipsticks just don't cut it. They aren't as opaque as I'd hoped, yet they don't look "creamy" at all, it looks streaky on your lips and if they didn't look chapped before, it definitely will find a way to show every little crack in your lips. The butter gloss is pretty much the same. It's barely "glossy" it's just a sticky, messy goop of color that still manages to settle into all the little cracks in your lips too. So far, NYX is reminding me of Mary K products, which to me, is one of the worst makeup and skin care companies ever made. I'll stick it out a tiny bit more and see if I can actually find something worth purchasing. If not, I'm gladly sticking to my trusty, SUPER cheap, wet n wild products. (Ahem, comparible to real high end makeup) Just sayin...Get it together NYX!

  9. I have not had any luck with any of the nyx brand lipsticks, glosses and now this whipped shit that doubles as a cheek colour? It comes off in minutes and not to mention, their lipstick (I have it in haze) doesn't even fully go on your lips! I don't understand what the hype is at all.....
