2019 No Buy

As auxiliary beauty recently noted, it seems like everyone is doing a No Buy this year, or at least this month. I'm curious to see if this is the beginning of a trend toward less consumerism, as people are becoming more aware of and frustrated with the role of money in politics and the increasing threat of climate change, etc.--or if it's just temporary fatigue after a year or two of seemingly endless product releases and shiny new things. I guess it will take a while to see how things shake out once the New Year's resolution season is over.

For me, it's a combination of both. I am really at the point where I can't think of anything else I want, much less need. I probably have more makeup right now than I could use in a lifetime, even if none of it was going to go bad. For skincare I'm all set too. I'm sick of filling bins with empty plastic containers (even though I know that the waste I create as an individual is minuscule in the larger scheme, and making people feel personally responsible for environmental damage is a distraction from the industrial and corporate entities that are creating the vast majority of it). I also question how much of my money I want to give to Ronald Lauder, for example--even though, again, my occasional purchase or lack of a purchase won't ever register among the billions that people like him have in the bank.

Mostly, buying more and more shit just doesn't feel like me. I think there's a hereditary aspect to my hoarding, but I'm pretty good at avoiding it in other areas of my life. (Moving on a yearly basis--or even more often!--also helps.) I started collecting nail polish while I was in grad school, when I had limited (but sufficient) income and was pretty stressed out. Nail polish was something small and affordable and entirely unrelated to my work that I could enjoy. I moved on from there to makeup and skincare. It's similar to the broader economic phenomenon in which sales of lipstick or nail polish increase during a recession, when we still want little treats but can't afford much. And guess what? It's five years later and I still have a modest, unstable income and a lot of stress. It's enough already.

When I started this blog, it was to point out good deals and to investigate whether various products were "worth it" (a subjective concept, for sure!). I am the person who recommended using a light, shimmery eyeshadow as a face highlighter, instead of buying a separate product (remember when it was 2013 and we still had to explain what contouring was?). Now how many highlighters do I own? (Not that many, I suppose, but more than none.) I still haven't become someone who buys the latest trendy thing as soon as it appears, and I've never made Rouge at Sephora or Diamond at ULTA, but I have become someone who buys more beauty products than a single human with one face really needs.

So I'm going to stop buying, and we tend to call that a No Buy in the "beauty community." I don't usually commit to projects like this, just like I don't diet, because I find that it's easy to get obsessive and that following restrictive, dogmatic regimens can easily backfire. But since I don't want to buy anything anyway, I think I might as well do it consciously and mindfully (there's a word that's over-used).

Doing this deliberately requires some rules, or at least guidelines, besides "just don't buy shit." Again, I don't really like arbitrary rules, but I guess the alternative would be to end up buying something, decide I've violated the whole premise of the exercise, and just start shopping mindlessly again. This is where I'd love to hear about your experiences and advice.

I like the idea of "replacement only," which I know is how lots of people frame it. But what does that mean, exactly? For instance, I am currently using an eyebrow pencil that I really like. In general I prefer pencils to other eyebrow products. When it's empty, do I permit myself to replace it with another pencil? Or should I then try to use a couple of pomade/cream brow products I already have, which are perfectly functional, just not my favorite? You don't have to answer that question specifically, but it's the kind of thing I'm pondering. In general, I plan on only buying staples like concealer, mascara, or skincare products with specific ingredients that are important to me. I certainly won't find myself finishing an eyeshadow or a lipstick and not having anything already in my hoard that can replace it.

Also, do I need to set a timeframe? Currently I'm thinking this will continue indefinitely, but is that unrealistic? I don't like the idea of counting down to a date when I can buy something again.

Finally, no more buying things "for the blog." I've never bought things that I didn't think I would eventually use just to blog about them (at least, not that I remember), but I have definitely bought things that I don't need right now because I thought they would make interesting blog posts. I have enough shit at the moment that has never appeared on the blog, and I'm busy enough that my blogging schedule is sporadic, at best, so I'm not going to run out of content any time soon. (I will accept free products from brands if they are things I actually want to try. That has only happened  a few times in all the years I've been blogging.) I also want to start posting on my ancient beauty blog again, because I'm working on an article, and I think doing so will help me make my way through the research.

So what do you think? Do I need more rules? Are you conscientiously limiting your beauty purchases, or restricting your budget in another area more this year than you have in the past? Is it purely for financial reasons, or do you have other motivations? I'm curious to hear how many other people are riding this train right now, and how you conceive of what you're doing!

I'll be updating with my thoughts on all this as time goes by both here and on Instagram.

Deals

Affiliate Links

I'm finishing up my fellowship (i.e. job) this month with nothing lined up for the fall. Shit. What that means for you is that while posts may be few and far between here for August, they will probably ramp up in frequency come September. In the meantime I am still procrastinating on Instagram, of course, and a reminder: you don't need the app/an account to procrastinate on there too. You can view IG accounts in a web browser. I'm sorry.

I figured I'd post a few deals I've seen pop up lately, while I'm still researching my next more substantive post.

Walmart has a beauty box right now for $5 with free shipping. The samples aren't the most exciting I've seen, but they are apparently customized for you based on a survey.  (There's also a men's box for $7. Whadyaknow, something for men that's more expensive than the lady version!)

Tarte is offering 25% off, with code BESTIES, and you get an extra 10% off if you sign up for their loyalty program (free). That makes some of the lip gloss and eyeshadow less than $6.

Nordstrom Rack has marked-down MAC, Urban Decay, Too Faced, Smashbox, Bobbi Brown, bareMinerals, Nars, Paula's Choice Caudalie, etc. I'm extremely tempted to buy a backup of Urban Decay Rocksteady for $9, but I really shouldn't be buying anything at all, much less backups, in preparation for the upcoming move and under-employment. You buy it instead! It's the best red lipstick, I swear.

Also, did you know that if you sign up for Madewell's loyalty program (also free), they send you a birthday gift? I just got mine, and it's a code for $25 a $26+ purchase, which is pretty great. Cheap jewelry, here I come.

Don't forget to use Ebates for a few more percent off most things.

Any other deals I should know about but absolutely not buy anything from right now?

Stuff's on sale

Affiliate Links

Happy Canada Day! I'm celebrating by posting about good deals on beauty shit that Canadians will probably not be able to access. Sorry. I hope some day that I will once again be in the land of nearly-free healthcare and inflated makeup prices with you all. Until then, my American friends: here's some consumerism for you.

I've been having some kind of allergic reaction on my eyelids lately, and I'm not sure if it's contact dermatitis caused by a product or if it's environmental. In the meantime, I can't take photos of all the (too many) eyeshadows I've bought recently and have been wanting to review, like the Anastasia Beverly Hill Prism Palette. So while I decide which post further down in my queue to work on, I'm procrastinating by fake online shopping (you know, where you put stuff in your cart and then close the tab) and trying to avoid Twitter (but failing). An excellent use of time. Join me! I'm going to mention an idiosyncratic mix of things that I've used and can recommend and others that I just want.

I bought the aforementioned Anastasia Beverly Hills Prism Palette on sale, but it doesn't seem to be marked down this week. Instead, Subculture is on sale for $21 at Ulta, in case you've been eyeing that one. I've never used it.

Ulta has a bunch of other interesting sales at the moment, and a $3.50 coupon. Their jumbo haircare products are all marked down. That shit lasts forever. Real Techniques brushes are on sale, and I like those. The CoverGirl TruNakes Roses palette is $9 (reviewed here), making it about the same price as Walmart, in case you're not going there. I haven't used the Wet N Wild highlighters, but people seem to like them, and the MegaGlo Palette is marked down to $10 from $15. Revlon's Electric Shock lipsticks look intriguing, but I haven't actually seen swatches of them. Anyone else? They're on sale. I do generally like Revlon lipsticks. Hey, and how about a blue-brown duochrome eyeshadow single from Catrice for $4.50, if you don't want to buy the whole Comfort Zone palette (reviewed here) to get one? That weird jelly highlighter from Almay is also marked down. Has anyone used that thing? I guess it's Almay's attempt to be relevant, and I admit I am sort of curious.

Don't forget to use Ebates for free money. (Details here.)

I'll also remind you that Nordstrom Rack has a beauty section online, where you can sometimes get recently discontinued products for a good price. The Too Face Natural Mattes palette is only $13, for example, and the Chocolate Soleil Bronzer is $10 (old version, I assume?). They also have lots of MAC, Bobbi Brown, NYX, Urban Decay, Bareminerals, Lime Crime, Caudalie, Paula's Choice, etc.

TJ Maxx has beauty online too, and they have some Lipstick Queen, Nars, Clarins, OPI, Boscia, Make Up For Ever, Clé de Peau, Burberry, SK-II, and a bunch of others. And if you buy them online, presumably no one has already stuck their grubby fingers in the product!

Any other good deals out there? Planning to celebrate your country this week (or mourn for it) by indulging in some good, old-fashioned American capitalism?

Deal Alert: Marcelle Skincare Set over 75% off on Birchbox

Affiliate Links

Just a quick post to let you know about this great Marcelle skincare set I bought from Birchbox last week, which is still available. For $15 you get a full-size moisturizer, a full-size micellar water, a full-size gel makeup remover, and a mini bi-phase makeup remover. It's cheaper than buying the moisturizer ($27) or even the micellar water ($17) alone. It also comes with a travel bag that seems to be fairly sturdy and useful. I just got mine, so all I've used so far is the moisturizer, which is a lovely light gel formula--and unlike most gels, comes in an airless pump, not a jar. I've used the bi-phase makeup remover in the past, though, and it's extremely effective.

Shipping is $5 (or free over $50).

(When I bought my set last week, there was also a 25% off code that Birchbox hasn't bothered to stop advertising on the brand page, but it's expired. Awesome deal nonetheless!)

Deals and sales you should talk me out of today

Affiliate Links

It's very quiet and boring at work today, so I'm browsing online sales. Since I'm on a budget, I really shouldn't buy anything, and yet. Please feel free to comment and tell me why I should or should not buy any of these things (or why you will or will not buy them yourself).

Nordstrom Rack finally has their beauty section online, and it includes some interesting shit. I actually already bought myself the Urban Decay Electric Palette for $24, since I'd been kicking myself for not getting it when it was on sale elsewhere (plus I had a Nordstrom gift card). But they also have a bunch more from Urban Decay, MAC, Smashbox, LORAC, etc., all of which I should not buy. (But speaking of good things I already bought from Nordstrom Rack, I also got this wool cardigan for $37, and it's perfect. I'm probably going to eventually get it in a couple more colors for work.)

Butter London's on HauteLook, and here's another thing I own that I recommend: Two Fingered Salute. It's one of my favorite nail polishes--mint with copper glitter. Hey, so far I am mostly finding things that you should or shouldn't buy and nothing for myself! I'm patting myself on the back.

Oh wait. Here's where I need help: Sephora. I'm very tempted to get the 4-piece Jack Black lip balm set for $20. I know I shouldn't be hoarding lip balm, but hear me out. It's one of my favorite formulas (it works amazingly well and doesn't taste like sunscreen), and $5 a piece isn't bad, and I really want to try the pomegranate and lavender scents. Also, they are offering double points on skincare today, which honestly isn't much incentive for me, personally. But then I might as well add a Bite lip crayon for $10 so that I can get one of the freebies (the code 25delights still works, by the way). I have a Flash subscription, so I don't have to pay for shipping. See how I talk myself into these things? Rebuttal?

By the way, if you really want to keep track of beauty sales, I'd suggest reading the Beauty Deals BFF blog. She also posts things like value calculations for free gifts, which are always very interesting.

Free Stuff (+ Shipping) from Stila, Beauty Blender, and DHC

Affiliate Links

I haven't posted deals in a while! But here are a couple that were inspiring enough for me to get out of my warm bed and open up my computer.

Get a $25 credit good for any Stila purchase from Beautykind when you use this link. That means you can get one of those Magnificent Metals eyeshadows (or anything $25 and below) for just the cost of shipping: $6. I've bought from Beautykind before and had no problems (here's what I bought last time). There's a similar offer from Beautyblender, but I think you can only redeem one per address.

DHC also has a deal where new customers can try their Olive Essentials Travel Set (regular $16.50) for free when you pay for shipping ($4.50) with code TRYB4UBUY. I haven't tried that stuff, but it sounds nice. If that's not up your alley, you can also get 25% off your first order with code WELCOME17, and if you're not a new customer, they are offering free shipping on orders of $35+ with code NOVSAVE35.

Any other good deals you've heard about lately?

Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss 50% off today

Affiliate Links

I have a real post almost finished that should go up later today, but in the meantime, I wanted to alert you to just about the only interesting thing I've seen so far in the ULTA 21 days of beauty sale, which is the Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss, which is on sale for $12. I have the shade Oil Slick (below, swatches here), and it's great. Have any of you tried the other colors? I'm tempted.

Amazon Prime Day Beauty Deals

Affiliate Links

So Amazon is having their annual sale extravaganza for Prime members. Honestly, a lot of the deals are not that exciting, and I get the impression that it's basically a clearance sale where they're trying to get rid of crap they have too much of. I would advise trying not to impulse purchase things just because they seem to be on sale (advising myself as much as anyone else), because it's hard to tell how much cheaper some things are than they were a week ago (regardless of whether or not they're labelled "30% off"). But if one of your staple or wishlist items is cheaper than usual here, you might as well get it now. You can click "Watch this deal" to find things that sound promising again later.

You can find all the beauty deals here. Here are some specific lightning deals that are coming up over the rest of the day (most of which are things I've tried myself in the past and liked): Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid, Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipsticks, Physician's Formula Eye Boosters Liquid LinerLime Crime Velvetines, L'Oreal Superstar Mascara, Nip & Fab Glycolic Pads, Body Shop Chamomile Makeup Remover, Acure Argan Oil or Marula Oil, Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Eyeshadow Palette, and the Wet Brush. I have no idea what the discounts on these products will be, but maybe there will be a pleasant surprise in there somewhere.

For those of you who don't have the time to stalk individual deals, there are also a bunch of "luxury" beauty products for 30-40% off. I was excited to see some Juliette Has A Gun fragrances in that section, but unfortunately the only two marked down are the ones I find least interesting: Romantina and Miss Charming. But this Instain blush trio from theBalm is tempting--I like the one Instain blush I have a whole lot (swatched in my previous post).

Also, if you've never purchased from the "luxury" beauty section, you can use the code NEW2LUXPD17 when you check out to get 30% off anything from that department. They have theBalm, OPI, Mario Badescu, Bioderma, Klorane, L'Occitane, La Roche-Posay, Clarisonic, Blinc, Zoya, Stila, LORAC, Jouer, Indie Lee, and a lot of other brands. Even though I am pretty sure I've shopped in the luxury section before, I was able to use the code to get the 1 oz. Juliette Has A Gun Lady Vengeance dropper bottle for $35.

So are you shopping or abstaining? Or are you above it all and not a Prime member to begin with? I'm not sure I'm going to renew my membership when it expires next month. I need to actually make shopping more difficult for myself.

Kitten Fur perfume? On sale?

Referral Link

HauteLook has Demeter fragrances on sale right now, including Kitten Fur. Has anyone smelled this in the wild (pun intended)? Actual kitten fur smells good to me as a certified crazy cat lady, but I feel like separating that smell from a physical cat could be gross. Some of their other odd scents are also included in the sale, like Dirt, Jelly Donut, and Paperback. Hmmmm.

Here's a photo of my foster kitty, Lucia, just because:

Sales on MAC, Paula's Choice, Bareminerals, etc.

Affiliate Links

Hautelook is interesting in that you can find new brands popping up now and then. MAC is the latest, though just the lip pencils and Huggable lipsticks are available, marked down 48%. I've heard good things about the Huggables--can anyone confirm? (Also, it seems like MAC is suddenly appearing in a bunch of new places like Ulta and Birchbox. A sign of declining sales maybe?) Hautelook also has Butter London (YOU SHOULD GET TWO FINGERED SALUTE!), Kate Somerville, and some other brands on sale if you want to make your shipping (~$6) go further.

Paula's Choice has 20% off plus free shipping this week, which I think is about as big a sale as they offer. No code needed. (You can also get $10 off using my referral link if you're a new customer, and see my various Paula's Choice reviews here.) You can get an extra 10% cash back from Ebates, too, which is pretty great.

Today is the last day of the Bareminerals Friends & Family Sale, which also gives you 20% plus free shipping (no code needed). Also offering that extra 10% off through Ebates. The eyeshadow duo in "The Epiphany", for $12, includes the shade A-ha, which is a gorgeous shade that's similar to Maybelline Bad to the Bronze (swatched here), but in powder form.

Most of the Sephora sales I mentioned last week are still going on too.

Anything I missed?

Deals and funny stuff

Affiliate Links

It's a gloomy day here, so I thought I'd post some pleasant shit. First, here are some interesting sales/deals I've come across:

Juvia's Place will be back on Hautelook at 1 pm PST today. Good timing, since I just reviewed their Nubian palette last week.

I just bought two Stila eyeshadows singles from Hollar for $3 each, and they're great. I bought Diamond Lil and Golightly. (New customers also get $2 off a $10 order if you use my link, plus they usually try to tempt you to check out with other discounts on the site.) They have a bunch of other Stila deals plus some Urban Decay liquid liners on Hollar, in addition to the usual drugstore stuff. Plus there are always OPI, Essie, and China Glaze nail polishes for around $3.

Sephora has added new stuff to their sale section, including several things from the Esteé Edit. (I wonder if that line is being discontinued? It didn't seem to really take off.)

The Target April and May Beauty Boxes are still available.

Now for the beauty-themed funny:

Clickhole's article "Fascinating Social Experiment: These Millions Of Women Tried Cheap Drugstore Makeup For Their Entire Lives," seems to be making fun of this ridiculous Buzzfeed article from last year that I blissfully managed to miss.

I am also totally on board with this mockery of fucking Glossier.

If you've come across anything else cheap or hilarious this week, please share with the class!

Target beauty box and other deals

Affiliate Links

I haven't been tempted by a Target beauty box in a while, but this month's actually looks pretty good. I wish it were $7 instead of $10, but shipping is free and you get a Wet N Wild liquid lipstick (not sure what color), Nubian Heritage bath bombs, and a Soap & Glory body scrub, among other things.

And because I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the Sephora sale was nothing special, here are some comparable deals out there this week. No FOMO necessary.

Nordstrom also has 10% off a large portion of their beauty section right now, which isn't a spectacular sale, but at least shipping and returns are free, unlike at Sephora.

Macy's also has 10% off beauty, along with some additional markdowns. Use code FRIEND. They offer free shipping on beauty orders, too.

You can get $10 off orders of $35 or more from DHC (of the famous cleansing oil) this month.

Caudalie has 20% off everything this week (no code).

LORAC has 20% off + free shipping (ends today).

Personal style continued: online consignment shopping

Affiliate Links

In my quest to find interesting, quality clothes to update my wardrobe, without spending a ton of money, I've been looking into consignment stores. Unfortunately, there aren't any decent consignment shops in my area, but there are some interesting online options out there, like TheRealReal. I bought my mother a great House of Harlow sunburst necklace (like this) from them for Christmas. It was $25 dollars, like new, and it came packed beautifully in a velvet pouch, with very fast shipping. I get kind of overwhelmed shopping sites like these for myself, though, because there's just SO MUCH stuff, and I'm not experienced enough to know what is a good consignment price.

But they are offering 20% off right now with code REAL plus most things seemed to be marked down an additional 30-50%, so I guess now's the time, if ever. I'm especially interested in finding some more dresses and skirts, since I don't have many of those at the moment. I'm going to sort of live blog my browsing of the site here, so let's see how it goes.

I looked through the dress section first. Be warned that there are no real plus sizes on this site, though there are size 14s to be found here and there. This Carven dress for $65 looks ok, but maybe not? Would it do weird things to my midsection? Also, I hate cap sleeves, and these are pretty cappish.

I also found this Lisa Perry dress ($76), which is not in my size and definitely doesn't fit into the style I'm trying to explore, nor do I think it would be flattering on me. But I love it, so maybe one of you can buy it and send me a photo of yourself in it?

If you like Diane Von Furstenberg, TheRealReal will be a goldmine for you. I'm not feeling bright prints right now, however, so there aren't any DVF dresses that appeal to me right now.

The skirt section yielded better results.

Akris wool skirt for $76:

Pretty, but not very summery.

Doo.Ri draped asymmetrical skirt ($60):

I feel like this could easily go either way: really cute, or really weird.

Cacharel pleated skirt ($52):

I like the asymmetrical pleating, but I'm not sure about the shape.

What? I really like tweed.

I didn't find a single top that I liked, unfortunately.

And I'm now tired and ready for a nap. I can't decide if I should actually buy any of these. I assume this is the kind of site where you kind of have to check every day or so to see what pops up, so maybe I'll get lucky yet. (This is why I keep going back to boring old J. Crew and the Gap.)

I know there are lots of other places to buy secondhand clothing online, the big ones being Etsy and Ebay, but I tend to get even more exhausted trying to find things that suit me on those sites. Do you ever shop for secondhand clothes online, or only in person? Any tips?

Thoughts about clothes and personal style

Affiliate Links

I'm not a fashion blogger, but spring and fall tend to be the seasons when I start thinking in depth about my wardrobe, and in particular, about my personal style. It makes sense, I guess, since it's at those times of year that I begin to transition from one set of clothing to the other, and it's a natural time to reevaluate what I have and what I no longer want to wear. I don't have a huge wardrobe, but I have more than enough clothing. I used to buy new clothes all the time, but recently, mostly because of my budget, I've cut it down to a few (or several) times a year. I also used to buy things based mainly on price, and I ended up with some great clothes that way, but the majority of it either wore out too quickly, or I ended up tired of it after a year.

The last few years I've been trying to pick up better quality items, and things that are classic enough that I'll be able to wear them for a long time. The problem is that, if you're someone who was stupid enough to get a humanities PhD, your clothing budget hasn't actually really increased since college. Finding decent clothing you can afford is not easy. The next step up from cheap shit, these days, is cheap shit that's more expensive. For example: J. Crew. I really like how their Tippi sweater looks on me, and it comes in lots of interesting colors. Unfortunately, I've bought five of them over the past 3-4 years, and three of those have ended up with holes in them within a year. So no fucking more. I also bought a very nice pair of their grey Martie pants in January at full price (though with a gift card), and the first time I washed them, the hems at the bottom of both legs fell out. I would be pissed if that had happened to $30 pants, much less a $90 pair.

I'm trying to branch out when it comes to the places I shop for clothing, while also being more particular about what I buy. For a couple of years now, I've felt adrift when it's come to my personal style. When I was in my 20s, I had a pretty strong sense of how I liked to dress, but the kinds of things I wore then just don't feel like me anymore. For instance, I wore a lot of dresses, lots of matchy-matchy colorblocking, bright colors, and graphic prints. Very early-wardrobe-remix-on-Flickr. Here are two outfit photos from 2010 (left) and 2012 (right). For instance, on the left, you can see (maybe) that the necklace matches the dress, the cardigan matches the shoes, and the cami matches the tights. It's a lot.

Obviously these outfits are outdated, but it's not just that. They were me then, but they aren't me now. It's not exactly a dire identity crisis, but as someone who has always been interested in fashion and who felt pretty strongly about presenting herself through her clothing, it's a bit disorienting.

Just buying random articles of clothing that appeal to me has not solved my problem. Just a couple of months ago I bought a lacy black polyester dress with a high collar at H&M, and it's pretty in theory, but I don't know when I'm ever going to wear it. I was a little delirious and desperate, I think.

I've also tried to hone in on my preferred style by adding whatever caught my eye to a Pinterest board, and I ended up with a lot of highly embellished evening gowns, retro skirts and heels, and menswear-inspired outfits. Hardly a coherent style.

Recently I came across a blog post, that I cannot now locate, describing the personal style guide based on body types developed by David Kibbe, the man in the photo at the top of this post who looks like someone you would definitely want dressing you. As you can no doubt tell, his system was published in the 80s. You can find lots of information about it out there, but the basic premise is that you take a quiz where you categorize the shape and size of just about every individual part of your body and it provides a label based on your results, along with recommendations for what styles of clothes will suit you best. You can see a helpfully illustrated version of the quiz here, along with a spreadsheet with all your style recommendations.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of potential problems with a prescriptive body type system that was developed in the 80s. I'm not going to critique it at too much length (though feel free to add your objections in the comments!), but I'll mention a few of them:

1. It's all very femmey. In fact, the more or less feminine you are advised to dress is based on your body shape, despite the fact that there are many reasons people wear gendered clothes other than how big their hands are or how round their hips are.

2. Some people just don't fit well into any of the prescribed categories. For example, proportions are correlated to height in this system, and so there's only one category that's technically for women my height, who are supposed to have an angular and willowy shape. That is really, really not me.

3. Your personality is supposed to be related to your body shape. There's all sorts of woo in there.

4. It's prescriptive. Don't tell me what not to do!

5. It's from the 80s. Ok, maybe I could find some "softly draping, pleated, tapered trousers" if I wanted to, but that's kind of A Look these days, not an everyday pants choice.

Personally, I still found the Kibbe method useful. I got slotted into the Soft Natural category based on my quiz. Now, while I may be soft and squishy, I don't know about natural, and the two words together make me sound like a cuddly hippie rather than the abrasive skeptic that I aspire to me. Nevertheless, most of the recommendations are actually the kinds of clothes that I do like to see myself in. Basically, I'm advised to wear clothes that are a bit flowy/drapey, but defined (not too tightly) at the waist. Somewhat intricate or artsy detail is good, but nothing too fussy. Textured fabrics, no garments that are too structured, assymmetry. Lots of the clothes I already have that I feel good wearing have these qualities: a little drapey, but with a clear waist, not too twee and not too masculine, but a touch of either is ok. I think the key thing to remember is that if there's something that really doesn't appeal to you (drapey pants) or doesn't seem to describe you (being under 5'8"), you can just ignore it. You are smart and you know yourself, so trust your judgement.

My plan now is to go ahead with Mr. Kibbe's prescription for me, and to see if it solves all my life's problems. I have to admit, however, that my first attempt was not a shining success. When the Gap had 40% off recently (like they do today, code TODAY), I ordered two things, one that fit my new Soft Natural persona, and one that didn't, really.

I bought this dress. Flowy! Defined waist! Pretty detail but not too much!

Total disaster. It looked like a sack on me--or at best, a sloppy night gown.

I also bought this shirt, which is absolutely perfect.

I always like boatnecks and stripes, though they don't necessarily fit my prescription. Whatever, I'm not going to give them up. The fabric this shirt is made from is extremely soft, so that's got to count for something.

I'm working on branching out in where I shop. There aren't many (any?) decent thrift shops in my areas, but I live close to a TJ Maxx now, so I should probably spend more time there. I do like the laziness allowed by online shopping, though of course there is that constant threat of spectacular failure, like that dress above. (For instance, I'm constantly tempted by all the dresses from eShakti, but I've had such terrible experiences with what I've bought there in the past that I've all but given up.)

I'd love to hear anything you have to contribute on the topic of personal style and finding quality clothes on a budget. What are your secrets? REVEAL THEM TO ME. If you're a Kibbe expert, you are welcome to correct my self diagnosis--and if you're not, as I said above, feel free to critique the hell out of everything here.

Do you feel like you have a strong personal style? Is it instinctive, or do you follow some set of rules? Have you ever used a "system" to tell you what you should wear, or just to guide you? What are your favorite places to shop for clothes? Why?

Is the Sephora spring sale worth it?

Affiliate Links

I'll just get right to it: pretty much no. Sephora's spring sale is happening right now, and they're offering discounts from 10%-15%. VIB Rouge gets 15% off and a little longer to use the discount, VIB gets 15% off, and BI gets 10% off. Those are some dinky fucking discounts, and if you don't have a least a BI account (which is free), you get nothing.

Unless you buy a ton of stuff, 10-15% is not going to add up to much saving. And if you're buying a lot just to make the discount larger, that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I think it's only worth shopping during this sale if there's something you can't get on sale anywhere else, ever. For instance, brands like Tarte, Too Faced, Urban Decay, and many others have a couple of 20-30% off sales each year. Chances are that you can wait for one of those if there's something from one of those brands on your list. (Note that when I say "you." I really mean "me." That is as much an anti-haul post for myself as for anyone else.) Those brands often offer free shipping too, or you can get it by signing up for their loyalty programs, like the Urban Decay Beauty Junkies thing. (Tarte is on Hautelook right now, in fact, so you might do better there, although you'll have to pay for shipping.)

If you can't get free shipping during one of those sales, but you have a Sephora Flash membership, and you only want one or two things, maybe 10% off plus free shipping will be a better deal than 20% off plus shipping charges. That is a reasonable calculation to make. Or maybe something has already been marked down in the sale section and you want to get a little bit more off the price before it sells out. Sure. (By the way, I bought the Chic It Easy set back in January, and it's pretty great. Even though it includes a tinted moisturizer and concealer that will only work for certain people. You get a full-size Nars Jungle Red lipstick in there, which is normally $28, while this whole kit is on sale for $25.) Or maybe you need something RIGHT NOW, so 10% off is better than nothing. (Do you really, though?)

In general, I have a pretty hard time mustering up enthusiasm for sales that offer less than 25% off. How about you?

All sorts of sales

Affiliate Links

It seems like every time I post lately I begin with some comment about how long it's been. Well, I guess I needed a lengthy hiatus this time. I haven't been feeling inspired, and no one wants to read an uninspired beauty blog. I have a post about color correcting that's 75% finished and has been sitting in my drafts folder for two weeks--I'll try to get that up tonight or tomorrow.

In the meantime, I thought you might be interested in some sales, if there's anything here that's been on your list.

Butter London, OCC, Korres, and Nuxe are all on HauteLook right now (anywhere from 20-80% off).

GiltCity has a deal where you can get 3 Allure Beauty Boxes, a year's subscription to Allure, and an eyeshadow quad (which I don't recognize--does it look familiar to anyone?) for $29. The boxes are usually $15 each, so that's not bad. (I think you also get 25% off by using my link. So do I.)

The Formula X Nail Cleanser is on sale on the Sephora site for $2 now. It keeps my polish on better than anything else--much better than just wiping my nails with remover before painting them. And I have terrible chipping, usually. But it can dry out your nails a bit, so use in moderation.

Also, I recently got some bottles of China Glaze and Essie polish for $2-3 each from Hollar (which I should not have bought, but that's only because I don't need more polish). They also have OPI, Orly Color Blast, and Revlon nail polish. You also get a $2 credit with my link (me too), minimum order is $10.

Anything fun going on with you lately, good-makeup-wise or otherwise?

Excuses are boring (but shopping is not?)

Affiliate Links

The title of this post comes from one of the mantras of Unfuck Your Habitat, a book that, in the greatest of ironies (not really), I have not got around to reading yet. Will it also help my unfuck my blogging, I wonder? How is it that I haven't managed to write anything in a week? WHAT IS TIME.

Excuses (the weather has been gloomy and my camera is mediocre and I don't have a good lighting set up and all my ideas require many photos) are boring. I'll try to hammer out an actual review later today.

Other than not blogging, I have also not been buying beauty products this month (except my Sephora Play subscription, which I signed up for last month). That's good, because I am still paying off all the vet bills from the last few months that I put on my credit card. (In happier news, we are now on the cat fostering list at our local humane society, so we should have a new kitty to look after before too long.)

However, my No Buy has not prevented me from monitoring sales, and it will not prevent me from alerting you to them. In my opinion, one of the best strategies for smart shopping is to put things you want on a list, and then when/if they go on sale, revisit the list to see if you still really want them. (Half of the time, in my case, the answer is no.) Doing this really helps me curb impulse spending. Of course, it doesn't work for limited edition products, but I'm not generally especially interested in those, anyway.

The big sale right now is Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty, and the most interesting deal of the day, in my opinion, is Too Faced Love Flush Blushes for half price ($13). I've read good things about them, and the embossing is very pretty, but I'm viscerally opposed to heart-shaped things. Not to mention that I have more than enough blush at the moment. You can see the whole calendar of deals here. Actually, most of the upcoming deals that look most interesting to me are blushes, like the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes, which will also be 50% off. I guess this is my anti-haul statement, then, because I don't need any of these and I'm not going to buy them (but I'm not about to shame you if this is the right time to pick up something you've had your eye on).

I also haven't abandoned my ancient beauty blog, btw--I just need to get my shit together.

So this seems like a good idea to ask for your best organization and motivation advice! I'm not someone who tries to fill every hour of the day with work, but I would love to avoid the panic of realizing a week has passed and I haven't done fuck all.

Free shipping from el.f. today only

Affiliate Links

Today only all orders from e.l.f. ship free. Combinable with code: BOLDLIP, which gets you a 4-piece lip kit with a $25 order. Valid 3/2 only. I actually haven't bought anything from e.l.f. for a while, and I think the only thing I'm actively using are a variety of Studio (black) brushes that I've had for years, which I like a lot. Has anyone tried something new that's worth considering?
