Hope you bought any Zoya polishes you wanted in their last sale, because they are now $10 a bottle! Sorry, as much as I love Zoya, that's way too much for me. They've raised the price $2 in just over 2 years--that's pretty steep when you think of it in terms of percentage.
I know there are much more expensive polishes out there, but I've never been inspired to buy them. I've tried some out and read lots of reviews, and I don't see a big (or any) difference that can be correlated to price. What's your upper limit for polish?
Generally my upper limit is around $5. I've done a full price OPI at Ulta once or twice as a treat/reward, but mostly I wait till they go on clearance or go to Marshall's.
ReplyDeleteBut I may be about to break that JUST ONCE for two Color Clubs (an oil slick and a holo), and then not buy any more polish for a few months because I'm running out of room. (Not buy any more polish hahahahahahahahahahah good one Karen)
that sounds about the same as my limit. I do have some more expensive polishes, like Butter London, etc., but I've always got them on sale. The Color Club Oil Slicks might have been the most I've spent for an individual bottle. But I knew I'd regret it if I didn't get them! Most of the time nothing is so unique that I can't wait it out.
DeleteMy usual upper limit is $10-15, but I've been known to spend more than that for a really special color (Deborah Lippmann Superstar, for instance). My really hard limit is $20. I've tried many, many polish formulas, and there's usually no quality difference between a $10 polish and a $20 one. I also have yet to come across a brand without some quality variation between shades.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame about Zoya, though. I wonder if the company is doing poorly?
I wonder why they raised the price too. It's now in a weird position that's priced higher than OPI etc., but lower than the next level (Butter London etc.). Not sure what that's going to accomplish. I wonder if other people will be turned off like me or if sales will remain about the same and they'll just make more.
DeleteZoya costs £10-11 in the uk (and is only available online afaik and even then not many places stock it). Essie costs £7.99 or £9.99 for top coats etc. Opi costs £8-13 depending where you get it from. Jessica costs £10-11. So $10 seems cheap!
ReplyDeleteHa, good point. I've been spoiled by living in the US for so long. If/when I move back to Canada, I may not be able to bring myself to ever buy anything again.
DeleteI have more flexibility in upper price limits for indie polishes, but I've never established a hard absolute. I don't think I've paid more than $10 for a polish ever, and rarely that much. Illamasqua is the most expensive polish I've ever gone in for, but I've bought all of mine for less than half the usual price. Zoya never caught my eye at the previous price (not for any particular reason- I just don't buy much nail polish) so I guess I'll continue not buying from them.
ReplyDeleteYou've reminded me that I may have spent $11 on Floam from Ninja Polish several years ago. I can't remember exactly how much. I don't usually go for indies, but it was so unique at the time. Now it's all thickened up and I have no real interest in wearing it ever again. Not a particularly wise investment!
DeleteI've never paid more than like $5 USD for polishes because I always go for weird local/Chinese discount brands. I've found some real gems that way. I don't think I've tried Zoya, but I dont think it can be THAT much better. Imo, shimmers tend to be easy to apply no matter the brand, and I suck at applying cream polish, no matter the brand.
ReplyDeleteNo biggie. Just wait for one of their sales or special offers.
ReplyDelete$5 and I still want a discount! I only ever buy nail polish on sale (unless it is $2 or less) because if I can get it at a lower price than retail, I consider that its actual value. I have foolishly paid FP on OPI, Essie, and even Indie brands like ILNP, but only because I wasn't patient.
ReplyDeleteUgh, $10, gross. $5-7 is my limit; I never pay full price for Zoya/OPI/Butter London/etc. I have about 10 Zoyas, but they were all either in the clearance section at Ulta or from Zoya's many sales. They really are very good about having regular sales that take it down to $5/bottle.
