Has xoVain become Pinterest? (i.e. a cesspool of DIY bullshit that either won't work or will end badly)

Here's a good recipe for an eye infection. I mean, okay, do it once in an emergency, and then throw the fucking tube away. When the author gets called out in the comments, she claims that that is what she meant, but in the article itself, she says you can keep using the mascara for a few more weeks by doing this. MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

  1. I think I've said this before, but I really feel like a lot of the content on that site is just designed to generate outrage because that means pageviews and comments. And it works! I just looked!

    1. Yeah, I guess I'm just contributing to the problem too. Though I doubt the traffic from here is a real blip on their radar.

    2. At least I can point out that this is wrong/pathetic to people who might not have realized. But I think most of the people reading here are smarter than that. Judging from Pinterest, though, a large proportion of the general population is pretty excited about DIY/natural recipes that are bad bad bad ideas.

    3. Haha yes, there are a lot of "interesting" ideas on Pinterest. I doubt your links to XOVain are ruining the world - it's actually nice to know that other people realize how ridiculous that shit is. If nice is the right word.

  2. My personal favorite article of theirs is the one a couple months ago that was like, "My grandma's super secret weird trick to smooth lips" and it was mixing olive oil with sugar. Although, to be fair, I read every single one of Alle's articles. Every word. Fire everyone but Alle. (And Faz can stay too)

Yeah, there are a few good ones there for sure!

  3. There seems to be a general "teehee look at how gross I am" vibe to XoVain. I still read everyday, but that's because Alle posts everyday and she is a goddamn treasure.

  4. I like the defensive responses if "but sometimes you neeeeed your mascara" No you actually don't. Sniffing your milk past theeexpiration date and proceeding because you need nutrition is not the same ad BUT MASCARA! Lorf help me just ho pick up some drugstore mascara until you can pick up the pricier shit. I'm sure by the time you've watered it down it's not performing the same and you might as well just grab some Wet N Wild instead of and infection.

    1. But sometimes you are in the middle of nowhere with dried up mascara and eye drops and no drugstore in the vicinity! Apparently? I mean, I guess my parents' place would qualify. But I would rather go without mascara than use some of their expired eye drops. And really, just use the dried up mascara. It will still work. I don't imagine most people keep a tube of mascara until it is literally completely dry, so use the stuff that is drier than you like, and pick some more up the next chance you have, if you are in that middle-of-nowhere-but-still-requiring-mascara situation.
