I need eyebrow help!

Affiliate Links

Avon has gone and betrayed me by discontinuing my favorite eyebrow pencil. It was the perfect not-too-soft, not-too-warm blonde pencil. Swatches and reviews here, here, and here. I only have half a pencil left, so I know that means only a couple more months of bliss. Then I'm going to have to find something new. (There are a few of them still available on Amazon, but because the seller used my photo for the listing without my permission, I don't want to buy from them.)

I am conducting on my own search, but just in case: does anyone have suggestions for neutral-to-cool taupe eyebrow pencils that are easy to use? Most of the blonde options I've tested have been on the warm side. I'd prefer something not too expensive, since I go through them pretty quickly. And I'm too lazy to fuss with formats other than pencils, for the most part. I'd appreciate any help I can get!

  1. I really love the Sephora brand brow pencil - it's $14, but it doesn't break (the $5 Colourpop one I tried broke after a couple of uses) and it's much cheaper than the Anastasia Brow Wiz or the Benefit products.

Caveat: I'm a redhead and the Sephora auburn pencil works really well for me, but I haven't tried the blonde one. From the website, it looks like they have a couple of light options, though.

  2. I've been using the 'Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil' for years and I really like it. I have dark brown hair so I can't speak for your shade, but it's <$4 so maybe give that a shot!

    1. Thanks! I'll check it out and see if I can find a match.

  3. I use a mechanical pencil from Ardell in either "taupe" or "blonde"--all the letters have totally worn off so I don't know which. It had a spoolie at the end, and cost maybe $5 at a grocery store. I have similar coloring to yours, and it's one of the few I've found that's not too warm for me.

  4. How beholden are you to using a pencil? If you're willing to compromise on format, ABH Dipbrow really is great.

Actual pencils: I've used NYX Micro Brow Pencil and it's okay. Their blonde shade is much too yellow, though.

  5. I really like the speed of a pencil. I guess I should look into Dipbrow since it's so popular, and I've heard it lasts forever. But if I'm going to use a brush, I should probably just finish up my elf brow palette. Also, I get the impression that Dipbrow is for intense/dramatic brows, and since mine are so sparse and light, I prefer a more natural look. Am I wrong about that?

    1. Brow pomades do last forever if you prefer a lighter/ more natural brow - you need SO LITTLE. You can definitely use it for sparse brows and a natural look, but it's not as quick as a pencil. I basically tap the brush in the product lightly and use that, or wipe it on the lid before applying. Sephora gave me a sample of dipbrow when I asked - I used it probably 20 times and barely made a dent in the sample. Sephora also had some carded samples that had a bunch of product - I have one somewhere, if they have the right shade for you I can send it to you. Or I bet you could find it on ebay.

  6. G at Nouveau Cheap always posts about the Maybelline Define a Brow (in dark blonde maybe? or taupe?) - apparently it doesn't have any warmth. She's posted about it many times over the years, so maybe look for reviews on that?

In terms of formula, I like Maybelline's Brow Precise pencil (not the micro one, the sharpenable one). It's the right amount of pigmented and the right amount of waxy to work well for me. I don't know if they have a shade that will work for you though, since I use Dark Brown.
