So I find myself, for really the first time in my life, dealing with dry/tight skin. I'm thinking it must be an age thing. It's dry in my apartment because the heat is on all the time now, and my face also get a little chapped from walking out in the wind everyday. But neither of these things are new. I have always lived in dry and/or cold and/or windy places. And I've always had oily/combination skin year-round. For the last month or so, it's been sliding toward the dry end of the combination spectrum.
My Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Moisture Gel, which has always served me admirably in the past if I ever felt a little dry, really isn't cutting it right now. So I thought I'd ask:
What's your favorite moisturizer? Cheap is good, of course.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who deal with a little oiliness and some breakouts too. Real combination skin havers.
(Isn't it interesting how "skin type" can be a part of identity, especially for those of us who are really into performing/doing femininity? It seems to be correlated to gender identity. It's not, "My skin feels a little dry lately," so much as, "I am now the type of person who has dry skin." Does that make sense to anyone but me?)
You have described my skin so well, it's almost like you are in my mirror. Right now my routine is to use St. Ives Apricot scrub, followed by Cetaphil facial cleaner in the shower, and then I use Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream (in the tub) all over my face and neck. My breakouts have decreased, and my skin looks really healthy. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteThanks! You know, my boyfriend has a huge container of Cetaphil moisturizer that he uses as body lotion. That would be an obvious (and cheap) place to start!
DeleteMy vote goes for Avon Anew, always. You can get great 2-for-1 deals and one jar lasts me a few months. I get one for day (with SPF) and one for night. I'm oily/breakout prone too, but starting to be combo-ish as I get older.
ReplyDeleteAh, cool, I have been thinking of ordering some things from Avon, since I'm almost out of my eyebrow pencil. I do hate jars, though!
DeleteI have combo skin and I've been using Neutrogena oil-free moisture for a few years now - partly because it works, and partly because one bottle lasts forever for me! (I switch between two different formulas depending on the season)
ReplyDeleteNeutrogena cleansers are my favorite, so that seems like a good idea. Thanks!
DeleteI alternate between like five different moisturizers because I'm insane, but if you're looking for something really basic have you considered trying plain jojoba oil? I have combo skin prone to dryness/breakouts and it doesn't cause me acne. Rosehip oil is good too. You can get little bottles of both for cheap on iHerb.
ReplyDeleteI use rosehip oil frequently, but as more of a serum than a moisturizer. It makes my skin feel nicer, but not really less dry. And I only use it at night, because otherwise it's just too greasy. In fact, I used it last night and my skin still feels a little tight this morning. But I have heard amazing things about jojoba oil and I've been looking for an excuse to try it. Thanks for reminding me!
DeleteI have oily skin and still get the occasional breakout, so I have to be careful with skin creams. I like Olay Regenerist serum and get it whenever its on sale. I used to buy it at BJs warehouse, but we moved and there's no BJs nearby. Will have to see if CostCo carries it, as I really like how it makes my face feel.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that is expensive for a drugstore product! But if it works, it works. They also seem to like it over on Beautypedia.
DeleteI have oily skin that tends to get dehydrated in the cooler months and I've been using Burt's Bees Intense Hydration night cream along with the cream cleanser from the same line. Its great at keeping the dryness at bay without making me break out or turning my face into an oil slick. During the day I use Burt's Bees sensitive daily moisturizing cream. They're a little pricey for drugstore products, but I had been using way more expensive moisturizers and these work just as well if not better than the fancy ones.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I got a bunch of that stuff a little over a year ago from BzzAgent to review. I hated it for a variety of reasons, but partly because it did make my skin too greasy (I really had no business testing it in the first place, with my skin type). So I gave it all away. Now I'm wishing I hadn't. This is going to feed my hoarding tendency. I have to keep EVERYTHING in case my skin type suddenly changes again.
DeleteI have really sensitive skin that freaks out if there is any change in the weather. (I live in an extremely rainy place but we've been having a really dry fall and my skin is peeling.) I've been using the Trader Joe's Antioxidant Moisturizer blah blah blah. It's like, $6? It's light and nongreasy but it still helps my poor lizard face.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds nice. I've been pretty impressed with the TJ's bath/body products I've tried in the past. Thanks!
DeleteSadly all of my moisturizers cost ALL THE MONEYS.
ReplyDeletemaybe I need to stop guest-posting.
Git outta here!
DeleteYOU CAN PRY MY TSUBAKI OIL FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS.
DeleteSt Ives Collagen Elastin is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI found the Yes to Blueberries daily moisturizer with SPF 30 available at my Walgreen's for half off (10 bucks--which is definitely on the pricier side of cheap). It uses physical sunscren, so it wouldn't be the best choice for you (sorry!) but it might be a good option for someone looking for a good moisturizer with SPF. It didnt' leave any white cast.
ReplyDeleteI have combination skin. So I also use PC skin balancing moisturize gel and Michael Todds Damascus Rose moisturize. However I got that one from a groupon for $20 bucks. Because I don't put down hard cold big cash on shit i never tried. However it has done wonders for this cold ass winter in Canada!!!!!!! My skin is no longer flaky or dry.
