Four things I didn't pack for my one-week visit to my parents' place in rural Canada

Well, there are a lot of things that I didn't pack, because I didn't want to check a bag, but these are the only ones I've missed so far.

1. My camera
Avon Speed Dry+ Nail Enamel in Mambo Melon
I wish I could take a good photo of my nails right now. Before I left, I used some of the Sally Hansen Real Nail Polish Strips for the first time. I used the Check Please! pattern, and I wasn't sure if I would like how they looked, since I'm not a big fan of nail art (on my own nails). But I found them surprisingly mod and mesmerizing, as well as easy to use. They advertise that they will last "up to 10 days", so I thought maybe I would get a week out of them. But no. They started to chip the third day, even after I added topcoat a few times, and by the fourth day, I couldn't stand it any longer and peeled them off. That's a day longer than most nail polish lasts on me, though.

Anyway, that's not what I wanted to take a photo of. My mother has a bottle of Avon Speed Dry+ Nail Enamel in Mambo Melon, so I decided to paint my nails with that, and it is fucking gorgeous. Plus the formula is amazing. I'm not sure it dries any faster than usual, but it was really smooth and easy to apply and almost opaque in one coat. Two thin coats was perfect. It's a coral red with pinkish shimmer. Unfortunately, without my camera I had to settle for the webcam shot above, so you'll have to trust me on this one. Imagine it just slightly brighter and slightly oranger. If you like that sort of shade, this is an awesome choice.

2. Quick-dry topcoat

I'm spoiled. I have no patience for this waiting-45-minutes-for-polish-to-dry nonsense. I want to be able to pee 5 minutes after painting my nails if I need to. My mom has some regular topcoat, which is nice and shiny, but takes too fucking long to harden. I used the spray Pam trick, which got rid of the tackiness on the surface, but I still had to be careful not too bump my nails on anything hard. I managed to get by with only a couple of barely noticeable wrinkles.

3. Dry shampoo

I just wanted to postpone my shower until the evening. I only missed this for about 3 minutes before I remembered that I could use cornstarch, though.

4. Tea tree oil

My skin has decided to betray me for some reason, and I have two huge zits on my chin. My mom has some tea tree oil, sort of, but it's the crappy Body Shop kind that is mostly alcohol, and not my trusty pure shit, so my face is taking a long-ass time to clear up.

Other than that, I packed pretty well. I wished I had some cortisone cream for all my mosquito bites when my mother handed my a tube that had expired in 1998, but that's not the kind of thing I would have brought anyway. As for makeup, I only brought a small amount, and I included a bunch of things that I am trying to finish up before I move next month. I will hopefully be able to throw away a few empty containers here and not haul them home with me again.

What kind of things to you forget to pack for a trip and then wish you had?

  1. I also do not have the patience to wait 45 minutes for my nails to dry. I'm always surprised when someone says something like, "Oh, you have such pretty nails. I wish I could paint my nails but I just don't have the time to wait for them to dry!" Like, girl, have you never heard of quick dry top coat? I feel like I should carry around a bunch of bottles and give them to those people. "Put this on your nails. It'll change your life."
