Is Sephora's Formula X nail polish discontinued?

Affiliate Links

How did I not notice this before? It looks like there are now only 5-6 shades left on the website, and everything is marked down. Boo! I've liked all the polishes I've tried from the brand and they had really unique options. Maybe they should have priced them lower to begin with. I know I never bought a bottle at full price, personally.

Has anyone seen the display in the store recently? I'm wondering if there are still more options on sale there. I might pick up the set with the top and base coats for half price.

  1. I was in a fairly new Sephora yesterday (Hillsdale, San Mateo, CA), and they had a big Formula X display, so that sort of leads me to think it's not entirely going away. Perhaps they're clearing out old stock?

    1. Well at least there's still some left in store if people want to stock up!

  2. I was in a Sephora on Saturday (Dec 3). All the Formula X products were on clearance and when I asked a salesperson she indicated that Sephora is discontinuing the line. I'm super bummed as I only just discovered it and it's easily the best at home polish I've found. I would think they will replace it with a new in-store brand, hopefully whatever is new is just as good but for now I'm super bummed :(

    1. Yeah, I guess there's some variation in quality, but the ones I've tried have been really nice.

  3. They've been slinging them left and right in subscription boxes too. I imagine they only do that to either introduce new brands or clear out inventory.

  4. This is so weird! It hasn't actually been that long since Formula X was introduced--maybe three years? I'm surprised they were so unpopular.

    1. I remember the big push when it came out! I never heard anything bad about it, but I guess I didn't hear that many people talking about it either.

  5. Oh, that's weird. I've never tried them but I've only ever heard good things about these! Maybe they're making room for something new and better? Or maybe that's just a lie I tell my customers when their favourite product gets discontinued and they ask why. (Actual answer: "I don't know, I'm just the salesgirl.")

    1. I read some comment on reddit from someone saying that they are only going to have Nails Inc. and Deborah Lippmann for a while, and then maybe introduce something new. But I don't know how reliable that is.

  6. Random thought on this - in every Sephora I've been in, the Formula X/nail polish station is a complete disaster. There are always people in there giving themselves full manicures (and, I'm assuming, not purchasing the color(s) they use), swatching colors all over the display - I've actually wondered how much money they've lost selling the stuff. It's a good product, but I think more people use it than buy it!

    1. Yeah, it's been pretty messy at my local store too. But I don't know what the alternative is, since they they have testers of pretty much all their product available!

  7. I was in a Sephora store about two weeks ago when the employee told me they are discontinuing formula x and will not be replacing it with anything else. She also said they will only be selling nail polish that is attached to a brand I.e Deborah Lippmann. She said that formula x didn't really sell that well... I stocked up after she told me this!! I went to another Sephora last week and they were running out of stock but it still is in stores for a bit longer!

    1. That's sad, because they made some colors that you couldn't find anywhere else!

  8. Hey ! I was google'n swatches of Formula X shades and ran across your post. I live in Tennessee, and we have 3 Sephora stores in our city. The Formula X line is definitely being discontinued. Everything is on sale for $5! If it's a set, then it's 50% off. I do my own nails, but I've always used China Glaze, Zoya, or Orly. I couldn't justify paying $10.50 for Formula X (being that the brands I liked cost less than that), so I never used them. I decided to try 2 shades since they were on sale for 5 bucks. I was so in love that I went back and bought 15 more shades. I also bought nail care items, which were all $5 as well. It's obvious that customers before me have completed raided the nail bar. lol I wish I would have known about the sale earlier because there's a shade I want named Mind Game. I can't find it anywhere. I love these, and it's a shame Sephora is giving them the boot. Have you purchased any since the sale announcement?

    1. Yes, I agree that it was priced too high, especially for a "store brand." Making it the same as OPI probably would have been smarter. I only ever bought them on sale too! It's hard for me to get to a store, and they don't have many shades left on the website, but I just bought "The System" online for $16, since I had heard good things about the base and top coats.

  9. Does anyone know where I can still get a few bottles of Formula X Sheer (Wondrous)? I have used this for a few years and is the only nail polish that has made my nails actually healthy. Please HELP!!

  10. I just tried to order Formula X Sheer in color Wondrous, as that is the only nail polish I have been able to use to get my nails back in to great shape. I thought there was a glitch in the Sephora system when I couldn't find it, and realize it is being discontinued. Does anyone know where I can still get a few bottles of this? Please HELP!
