I am so fucking uninspired fashion-wise lately. I've actually been thinking about just buying a bunch of Old Navy boatneck tops and a handful of J. Crew sweaters in that one style I like in several colors and just basically developing a uniform. Zzzzzzzzzzz.
I hate all the clothes I own, but I really can't afford to replace them. And they're fine, anyway. Putting together outfits used to be one of my favorite little daily pleasures, and now all I want to do is throw on whatever's crumpled up on the floor next to the bed.
Have you had this experience? How did you snap out of it? HEEEELP MEEEE!
Maybe the trick is to get out in the fresh air and start feeling more positive about things in general, and the style will follow. It's spring now, right?
I can't help you - I wear uniforms too. Pants, camisole, cardigan. Every.single.day. Sometimes I'll go crazy with a pullover sweater!
ReplyDeleteI never used to! But now it seems like a good idea, and that makes me a little sad. I mean I know people who do it and look great, but it's weird for me.
DeletePullovers are a little out there, though . . .
my advice: buy really boring colors. think navy, black, white, cream, gray. those color combinations look good together. they make you look polished even when you can't be bothered to wear something unique every day. this is what I've been doing lately and it helps! then when i wear something colorful, like a purple scarf, I can be like, "yeah, I made an effort." though i did just buy this tshirt from JCrew with the days of the week in Spanish. craaaaaazy https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/knitstees/shortsleevetees/PRDOVR~A3894/A3894.jsp
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I have too many colors. Which I always thought was a good thing, but now I'm like . . . teal? Jeans it is, I guess. These ones look mostly clean. Maybe I need to become a Person Who Wears Scarves. I have some, but I always forget about them.
DeleteThat shirt is pretty wild! How will you find anything to go with it???
Fashion blogs can help get me out of a rut. It takes effort to find bloggers who approximate your sense of style/body type/price point but when you find a good one that's not just a 19-year-old waif wearing artfully draped $5000 designer sacks*, it's so much fun. But yeah, it might just be a miserable end of winter thing. Maybe put aside a bit of cash to buy one or two new things? Sometimes the excitement of picking something out helps. Or just say "fuck it" for a while and let the fashion come back on its own. I'm a big advocate of "fuck it."
ReplyDelete*No offense to 19-year-old waifs who wear artfully draped $500 designer sacks. There's just...so many of you. And you just don't speak to me, man.
That used to help me too. I'm enjoying some of the super retro ones, still, but they wear styles that I can't really pull off for everyday - or at least I don't have the motivation to try. I'll keep looking, but it seems like there are just SO MANY boring blogs with people wearing whatever crap some store sent them for free that week. Are there any non-waif blogs you'd recommend?
DeleteBut fuck it is probably a good approach for the time being.
zerostyleblog.com. The author runs Re/Dress, lives in the Midwest, and features affordable finds.
DeleteI don't think there's anything wrong with finding a uniform. My recommendations are
-replace/refurbish your shoes if they have gotten beaten up over the inter
-visit a thrift store. The joy of rummaging around and trying on silly things can help banish winter blues, even if you don't find anything. Additionally, thrift stores frequently have great deals on jewelry/accessories that can help you jazz up your uniform.
I love Zero Style! But she rarely posts anymore, and though I like looking at her style, it's really different from mine, so it's not inspiring, per se. I wish there were more like that, though.
DeleteI like Already Pretty, and her blogroll is worth perusing too. Also Academichic doesn't update anymore but I still like to browse the archives from time to time.
DeleteGood lord, don't ask me. I was looking at the spring offerings of everybody from Land's End to Anthropologie today, and finally decided just to buy a half dozen mechanic's coveralls, rip out the sleeves and roll up the legs, and call it a day.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds way more interesting than anything I saw in the J. Crew catalog I got yesterday. Maybe I need some kind of costume or persona . . .
DeleteI used to be a total clothes horse but this is how I feel all the time lately and it's actually fine because I'm saving a lot of money not shopping in addition to hoarding makeup. *ahem* But to snap out of it, you can try picking up some cheap accessories to jazz up the outfits you already have, or focus on a new colour or two to incorporate into your current closet. Small touches like a fun scarf can really perk things up and doesn't have to cost much.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good way of thinking about it, I guess. Though I did have to buy a $300 fucking suit this winter for job interviews. SUIT. I hate suits, and I had very limited time to shop for it, so I ended up with a very boring one. That cancelled out a decent part of what I might otherwise have saved by not buying clothes.
DeleteI have so many accessories, but I should definitely consider more scarves. I'm sure the weather will continue to be depressing enough for me to get a few more months of wear out of them (I live not too many hours away from you across the border).
